TECHNICAL LEADER MENTORING

Czufin has extensive experience coaching and developing technical leaders.  He has mentored multiple Engineering Vice Presidents, Directors, and Senior Managers at multiple companies.  He is the author of, “The Art of Being an Effective Technical Leader” based on his more than 40 years of experience as a technical leader in the nuclear power industry.   His focus is on organizations that have healthy work environments and produce and implement high quality, timely and cost-effective solutions to improve operational performance.  As the senior technical leader at a nuclear facility, Czufin was instrumental in taking a longstanding mediocre performing plant with a marginal technical organization, to a sustained, top operational performer with a very strong technical organization.  This station set multiple world records for operational performance. He strengthens technical organizations by creating an environment where alignment on direction, standards, expectations, capabilities, and accountability are clear and demonstrated. He sets the standard for the leadership team to be highly engaged, aligned and have ownership for the organization and station performance.

ORGANIZATIONAL AND TECHNICAL TRAINING

For the last 11 years, Czufin has presented, “Leading Engineers – An Insider’s View” at the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) Senior Nuclear Plant Manager Course.  This training is based on personal organizational experiences over his career and how as leaders, our actions or inactions can create a healthy or unhealthy work environment.  The material is centered around technical topics, but the takeaways are focused on day-to-day leadership behaviors and how they create and sustain a healthy work environment. 

In 2023, Czufin created, “Developing a Critical Mindset for Healthy Challenge” based on personal experiences to teach participants how to think differently when engaging in an issue, decision, or course of action.  This training focuses on Problem Identification & Solutions, as well as Risk Decision Making.  Czufin teaches how to identify “what”, “how”, and “when” to challenge, and it accelerates the proficiency of Engineers, Operators, and other key personnel to be able to effectively challenge technical issues, conclusions, and decisions.  Over 450 Engineers and Engineering leaders from multiple companies have attended this training with overwhelmingly positive feedback.

As the primary industry author of the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) Technical Conscience Principles, coupled with holding senior management positions, Czufin has a clear, yet balanced understanding of the organizational roles and responsibilities necessary to ensure the technical position is appropriately considered in station decisions.  Czufin has presented training on this topic hundreds of times using his personal experiences, and the material can easily be tailored to the customer’s needs. 

With over 40 years of experience in the nuclear power industry, Czufin has worked through thousands of problems and troubleshooting cases at multiple facilities. These have ranged from simple to highly complex problems that are often worked around the clock due to the potential for operational safety and reliability impacts.  Based on many years of problem-solving & troubleshooting experiences (both favorable and unfavorable), he uses a systematic, thorough approach to troubleshooting that has proven to be very effective. Czufin has developed “Troubleshooting – 411” training materials to help identify weaknesses and improve performance in problem-solving & troubleshooting.

ORGANIZATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS ASSESSMENTS

Czufin has worked with numerous nuclear utilities to assess multiple organizational issues.  These included low employee morale, high attrition, high error rates, an unhealthy work environment and a lack of respect for the technical position, to name just a few.  As one example, a customer had low morale and high attrition rates in an organization at a station, and they requested that Czufin visit the site and complete an assessment.  He was able to quickly identify the causes and provided specific recommendations to correct the issues.  The station implemented the changes, and the morale and attrition rates have shown a significant improvement.

CASUAL ANALYSES AND DOCUMENT REVIEWS

Czufin has worked through hundreds of organizational, human performance and equipment related root cause and apparent cause evaluations at multiple facilities. Based on many years of preparing, reviewing, and approving causal evaluations (both favorable and unfavorable), Czufin has developed a systematic approach to identify the potential weaknesses in causal evaluations.  He has also developed specific criteria that he has used on multiple occasions to successfully identify the causes of equipment failures when there was little to no forensic evidence available.

INDEPENDENT SAFETY REVIEW BOARD

Czufin is a former executive with over 40 years of experience in Engineering, Maintenance, Work Control and Operations Support management at four operating BWR and PWR nuclear power facilities and two corporate offices.  He also has a BWR and PWR SRO Certification, held leadership roles for industry initiatives and he has provided on-site support at 40 different nuclear plants in the US and Japan.
